If you’re a medical student at the University at Coney Island Hospital, you have some pretty amazing places to call home. You can opt for Manhattan and all of the excitement it brings, or you can choose to call one of the surrounding cities home. Either way you can’t go wrong!

The University at Coney Island Hospital has a convenient location that is accessible from Manhattan and its surrounding boroughs. Because of the location, there are many different housing options for hospital medical students. It all depends on how far you want to be from the hospital.

Some students may prefer to live in Brooklyn with a minimal commute time, while others may opt for the lights of The Big Apple. Let’s take a look at the different housing options for those studying at the University of Coney Island Hospital.

Before you even start looking at housing options, you’ll want to decide if you’ll be living solo or have a roommate or two. This will drastically narrow down your options and how much you can afford. Once you determine if you’re going to be living with anyone, you can start to explore the living arrangement options in the area you choose.

Apartments

Apartments make up the majority of the housing options you’re going to see near and around the University at Coney Island Hospital. If you’re living solo, you may want a studio apartment because you won’t need that much space and you can save money.

Depending on the size of the bedroom, you may be able to get away with a one-bedroom apartment if you only have one roommate and are willing to share a room. If you want your own space, go for the two-bedroom.

If you choose to go the two-bedroom route, expect to pay more than $2,000 a month in rent. You should be able to find one-bedroom and studio options for less. The price will depend on the apartment complex you choose and the neighborhood.

Whether you want a studio, one, or two-bedroom, Beach Haven Apartments located at the border of Gravesend and Brighton is a great location. It’s just minutes from the Coney Island Beach and Boardwalk. Who doesn’t want to be near the beach and boardwalk? Yep, that’s what we thought!

House Rentals

If you want privacy and don’t want to deal with other tenants in an apartment building, you may want to rent a house.  These are best suited for multiple roommates who can split the pricey rent and other living expenses. House rental prices can run you a few thousand dollars because of the living space and privacy you’re getting.

Co-Op

For those who intend on making the area their home, there is also the option of a Co-Op. A Co-Op (cooperative housing) is a type of home ownership that is common in big cities like New York.

A Co-Op is a building that is jointly owned by a corporation that includes all of the people living there. Unlike buying a home, when you buy into a co-op, you’re personally buying shares in a nonprofit corporation that allows you to live there.

Some people prefer a Co-Op situation if they can’t yet afford a house, but don’t want to just pay rent in an apartment. Co-Ops can be beneficial for people living alone or those who want to share the cost.

Condominiums

If you want to live in a community where you don’t have to worry about mowing grass or shoveling snow, a condo could be the perfect fit for you. If you’re choosing to buy a condo, you want to be certain that you’re going to stay in the area to make it worth your while.

Brooklyn and New York City have plenty of condo options out there. It really just depends on the size you’re looking for and what types of amenities are most important.

Townhouses

You can find brownstone townhouses all around New York City as well as in Brooklyn. With a townhouse, you own your home and the land it’s on. Townhouses are usually built very close together and are often connected. You’ll find that many are narrow and have multiple floors. Many times they are part of a community. As with some of the other housing options, if you go the townhouse route, you’re probably certain that you’re going to be calling the area home for a while, even after your medical training is done at the hospital.

The Bottom Line on Housing Options Near the University of Coney Island Hospital

As you consider the different housing options near the University of Coney Island Hospital, you need to think about two main factors:

  • Do I want to live alone or have roommates?
  • Do I intend on calling the area home once my medical training is done?

The answers to those questions will determine if an apartment, Co-Op, townhouse, or condo living is best for you. Once you have chosen a housing option, it’s time to determine what area you want to live in. When you combine these two, you can start hunting for the perfect place to call home.
